In the last decade, science has unraveled the mysteries around how our bodies become toxic and how we detoxify. It’s not complicated, but as some of the facts are contrary to many existing beliefs, there’s still a lot of confusion regarding what a detox actually is and why we need to detox periodically.

Our bodies are made up of at least 50 trillion cells, and they all have their own internal ecosystem that needs to be cleaned and maintained periodically. Detoxing is essentially detoxing our cells, and the primary bodily mechanism involved in this role is called autophagy. When autophagy is switched on, our cells start cleaning and repairing themselves. It does this in three ways:

Expelling toxins from the body.

Burning accumulated debris for fuel.

Recycling old or damaged cellular components into new cells.

This sounds great, and it is great. The only ‘problem’ is that autophagy doesn’t switch on - beyond a low background intensity - unless we’re fasting. Unfortunately, our bodies are adapted to the hunter-gatherer feast and famine lifestyle our ancestors lived for millions of years, not the very recent 2 or 3 meals a day modern lifestyle. When we’re consuming food, our bodies are focused on digesting and processing that food, and it’s only when there’s no food that our bodies switch to cleanup and repair mode.

From what we now know, we can see that it was no coincidence that traditional detoxes all revolved around fasting. Through trial and error, they learnt what worked, even though they could not know why it worked.

In practice, this means we have to deliberately create the conditions that prompt our bodies to detox, as those conditions don't occur naturally anymore for most of us. There are no shortcuts; there isn't an ‘all gain, no pain’ way to detox, despite what some still believe.
